Description ~ History of the Knitting Belt and Knitting Belt Class

This class begins with a talk on the general history of knitting belts, showing the straw and feather sheaths used before and how it is likely leather belts evolved. In this talk Janette will discuss their benefits and how they are used to allow walking and knitting, along with what life was like 100 + years ago when they began using leather knitting belts. Included in the talk are photos from the Shetland Museum and Archives Collection. Many thanks to the staff there.

 

The hands-on part of this class uses and step by step instructions on using the belt, first with 2 needles then moving onto knitting in the round with 3. Plus an opportunity to add a second colour to knit fair isle with the belt. There will be plenty of time to ask questions.

This class will cover ways to attach new colors, how to carry your yarn at the back (floats), achieve an even tension and tips on colour choice and patterns. Knitting in the round is optional the project can be knit flat.

Description ~ Fair Isle Yoke Bag

Have fun learning how to knit Fair Isle. In this class you will cover ways to attach new colors, different ways you can hold your yarns, how to carry your yarn at the back (floats), achieve an even tension and tips on colour choice and patterns. This project is knit in the round. Each student will have the chance to make their own fair isle color combination from over 100 Shetland wool colors. Janette will give techniques on how to get the look you are after, whether you want a more subtle look, traditional or bold and bright.

A class on how to rework that fair isle beanie pattern you love into a beret style or how to radically resize a fair isle hat pattern to fit. You will be able to rework one of Janette’s Fair Isle hat patterns during the class or bring your own. This is a paper exercise class, a calculator or phone with calculator app will be useful.

Description ~ Fair Isle Knitting - Shetland, Tips and Tricks, Q and A

An illustrated talk on Fair Isle knitting from the late 1800’s through to the development of yokes. This talk will detail how my own family history fits into the story. The talk includes photos taken from the family album. This lecture will also incorporate other elements of Fair Isle knitting, Shetland life in times past and Shetland sheep in their variety of natural colors.

 

Janette has many knitting tips and tricks she can share. Including a unique way of creating a stitch that even the most advanced knitters have not seen before that is hardly visible so works in well to stockinette sections of your work.  This is something Janette will demonstrate in class as well as this lecture.

 

After the lecture Janette will answer questions about Fair Isle knitting and Shetland’s knitting history.

In this class Janette will take the fear out of cutting your knitting.  She will show you 3 ways to reinforce your steek and how to pick-up stitches for a rib, button band or sleeve in your project and how and where to cut your steek. Techniques required when knitting Fair Isle cardigans, vests, and sweaters in the round.
